The lights go off, the door closes, and two minutes later it starts: meowing, scratching at the carpet, paws under the gap. You open the door once “just to check” and suddenly it happens every night. If this sounds familiar, you are not dealing with a stubborn cat. You are dealing with a cat who has learned exactly what works.
Why your cat cries at the bedroom door
Their body clock is not yours
The RSPCA notes that cats are most active in exploration at dusk and dawn. A cat that has slept through your working day is ready to go just as you want to sleep.
They want company
The RSPCA also suggests night activity may be a form of social play and attention seeking. A closed door shuts them out of the room where their person is.
It has worked before
Every time the door opened, the cat got what it wanted. Even a few successes are enough to keep the habit going. The Dumb Friends League puts it bluntly: any interaction will reinforce the behaviour.
Hunger
A long gap between the evening meal and morning is a common trigger, especially if the crying turns into an early morning alarm. Our guide to a cat who wakes you at 5am covers that pattern in detail.
When it is a vet problem, not a behaviour problem
None of the advice below should replace a check up for a cat whose behaviour has suddenly changed.
Step one: door open or door closed?
Both choices are fine. What fails is switching between them. A cat that sometimes gets in learns to keep trying, and to try harder.
| Option | Works well if | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Door open | Your cat settles once it is with you | Paw attacks on feet, early wake ups |
| Door closed | You are a light sleeper or have allergies | A few hard nights while the habit breaks |
If you choose closed, make it closed every night, for everyone in the household.
The night routine plan
- Build a daytime that is not just sleep. Window perches, puzzle feeders and hidden kibble give your cat something to do while you are out. If yours ignores food puzzles, see what to do when a cat will not use a puzzle feeder.
- Play hard in the evening. Both the RSPCA and the Dumb Friends League recommend play sessions in the evening, and the RSPCA suggests keeping them at the same times each day so your cat can expect them. Use a wand toy and let your cat chase, pounce and catch.
- Feed after play. The RSPCA suggests a meal closer to bedtime so your cat is less likely to wake you for food. Hunt, catch, eat, sleep is a natural sequence for a cat.
- Make the other side of the door a good place. A warm bed, water, litter tray, a scratching post and a toy or two, outside your room. The Dumb Friends League recommends a cosy cat bed in another room if your door stays shut.
- Consider a timed feeder. If crying turns into a pre dawn breakfast demand, the RSPCA suggests an automatic feeder set for your cat’s active time, so the food comes from the machine, not from you.
- Then ignore the crying completely. No opening the door, no shouting, no “shh”. Earplugs or white noise help. Give your cat attention in the morning only once it is quiet.
Why it gets worse before it gets better
When a behaviour that used to work suddenly stops working, animals usually try harder before they give up. Tufts veterinary behaviourist Stephanie Borns-Weil warns that unwanted attention seeking behaviour will get worse before it gets better, and that you must keep ignoring it until it has stopped completely. Her article is about dogs, but the same learning principle applies to cats.
Avoid punishment too. Spraying water or shouting is still attention, and it can make your cat anxious around you without solving the problem. If your cat also turns its night energy on your feet, read why your cat attacks your ankles.
FAQ
Why does my cat meow at my bedroom door at night?
Usually a mix of natural dawn and dusk activity, wanting company, hunger, and past success: if the door opened before, the cat learned that meowing works. New crying, especially in older cats, should be checked by a vet.
Should I let my cat sleep in my bedroom?
Either choice is fine. Pick one and stick to it every night, because a door that sometimes opens keeps the crying going.
How long does it take for a cat to stop crying at the door?
It varies by cat, and it often gets worse for a few nights before improving. Consistency matters more than any single trick.
Is it cruel to shut my cat out of the bedroom?
Not if the cat has a comfortable bed, water, a litter tray and things to do, and gets play and attention during the day and evening.
Why has my old cat started yowling at night?
Night yowling in older cats can be linked to medical problems such as hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure, sensory loss, or cognitive dysfunction. Book a vet visit.
